NBC advocates for Sustainable Plastic Practices to Commemorate 6th edition Walk-for-Nature

In alignment with its long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability and a World Without Waste through sustainable plastic management, the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Ltd. partnered with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation for its annual ‘Walk-For-Nature' on Saturday, October 21st in Lagos State.

The event, themed “Solutions to Plastic Pollution”, aligns with NBC’s proactive efforts to highlight the immense opportunities for environmental stewardship and taking a bold step towards fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and awareness among Nigerians. The awareness walk spanned across major clusters including Ikeja LGA, Kosofe LGA and Lagos Island East LCDA, and included environmental enthusiasts, activists, and concerned citizens from across Nigeria using the platform to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues and fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Joseph Onoja, the Director General of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, extended his heartfelt gratitude to NBC for their unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability, which aligns seamlessly with the organisation's ongoing efforts. He said, “The Nigerian Conservation Foundation has been at the forefront of nature conservation and sustainable environmental management in Nigeria. We are excited to have partners like NBC to join us in our quest to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our natural resources and mitigating the harmful effects of plastic pollution. Together, we aim to make a significant impact on plastic recycling and management, ultimately safeguarding our environment for future generations.’’

Commenting on the initiative, Corporate Affairs and Community Partnership Manager (Lagos & West) 0f Nigerian Bottling Company, (NBC) Ltd., Jerome Oyebanji, restated the organisation’s efforts towards an environmentally sustainable society.

He said, "At NBC, we recognize the importance of environmental sustainability and the role businesses must play in safeguarding our natural resources. We have implemented a comprehensive array of measures to ensure that every phase of our operations, spanning from manufacturing to the end consumer, contributes to the solution for plastic management. However, we also recognize the vital role of public education in raising awareness and empowering individuals to take active steps towards a World Without Waste. In June, as we commemorated World Environment Day, we endeavoured to exemplify the behaviours we aspire to see within our community. This led us to engage with our host communities by organising a plastic recycling awareness campaign."

Our approach to effective plastic management also includes initiatives like plastic packaging weight reduction and the establishment of recycling banks, such as the Green Eco Hub at Unilag. As an organisation, our overarching vision is to create a world where plastic is never considered waste but is seen as a valuable material. This underscores the pressing need for immediate action and collaborative efforts.

NBC continues to prioritise plastic recycling and waste management across its manufacturing plants to further solidify its long-term sustainability commitment. The company has partnered with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation for six years to create public awareness for environmental causes. In addition, NBC and The Coca-Cola Company invested over 196.4 million Naira in 2022 through the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance to increase post-consumer packaging collection in line with its global commitment to collect 1 bottle for every bottle it puts in the market by 2030. Furthermore, through the recycling alliance, we have recovered 58,254 tons of PET, equivalent to approximately 2.6 billion bottles from 2020 to date.
